About the

Giant Flag

A Legacy Project of Vast Proportions

We are building a giant flag made up of millions of coloured desert cacti and succulents, and a four-megawatt solar field, on previously-barren land in the Camdeboo region of South Africa. Viewable from space and the size of 66 soccer fields, The Giant Flag is a new model of economic stimulus for previously disadvantaged communities and a celebration of the spirit of South Africa and her people.

Make Change Happen

It's not just about the Flag - we’re also putting a South African community on the map. Through the creation and maintenance of the Giant Flag, we’ll be creating hundreds of green collar jobs, with women constituting a majority of the labour force.

We're not just seeding a few plants, we're growing a community that could become a model for a thriving sustainable development. Your contribution, big or small, has the ability to transform people's lives.

Contribute

We Need a Giant Helping Hand

We need you to help us realize this vision. Adopt a plant, part of the white road or solar panel in the Giant Flag, and, you’ll receive a certificate with your name with the GPS coordinates of your contribution. Share it on social media, print and frame it - or adopt in the name of a friend or loved one for a meaningful gift.

Become part of something that creates economic opportunities for the poorest of the poor, honours our incredible natural environment and showcases the awesome creativity that South Africa brings to the world!

Adopt a Plant

The Camdeboo region

The word Camdeboo is derived from the Khoi word meaning ‘green pool’ or ‘green hippo pool’ from the Khoi Cam-/Kam- ‘green’ and -debo(o) ‘pool, hippo pool’. This area is steeped in heritage and culture and now that it’s home to the Giant Flag and you can help join us in putting the Camdeboo back on the map!

More Reasons to Adopt:

Leave a legacy

Through your contribution, you will not only be buying a plant; you will be leaving a legacy for generations of South Africans to come. The South African flag was designed with a vision for building a country that not only works for its people but encourages us to work together for positive change. The Giant Flag will embody that spirit and serve as a living reminder of the true spirit of South Africa - for hundreds of years.

Global connection

With your help, this project has the potential to become the biggest global collaboration of its kind. The Giant Flag will serve as a community of optimism, linking people through the power of positive change. Contributors will be able to share messages of support and spark new connections that will hopefully grow as the Giant Flag grows

Green is great

Green is the new black … red, white, blue and yellow! The millions of succulents and cacti in the Giant Flag will be able to offset approximately 200 tons of carbon a year which will play it's part in combating climate change. They will also bring back rich and diverse plant life to this currently barren area. Plus, our 4 megawatt solar field will have the ability to power more than 4000 homes.
